Charities to help all of us... Thanks to everyone who has offered suggestions to help create this list of usual household items to donate. Some of the charities I could find nothing on. Some of the information was old and they weren’t doing it anymore. Here are a couple of suggestions as you plan your donation. All charities need monetary donations and volunteers, so I have not included those requests here. All charities were considered equal—a place to donate your things. If you have a preference to the type of charities, (who they are, what cause(s) they support, etc.) do a little research yourself. Cell phones recycling is very popular right now, so I have limited the number listed. I have also excluded the request for new items. 1. Give things away before they rot, break, get moldy, or lose value. 2. Call the organization first to double check that they still are collecting the items. 3. When giving the item to the charity, include a value of the item (s) and your contact information to receive a receipt. 4. If you use any of these, please let me know how it goes. Do they accept the items listed, are there any special requirements or procedures? Please let me know. I have tried to check and double check the information. Here are a couple of myths that I have come across. At this type no charity can accept medicines previously prescribed for individuals, opened medicines and opened medical supplies. Something about terrorism. Flying Doctors and Doctors without Borders are not accepting. An article from Costco (provided by Risa Goldberg, professional organizer): 1. Crush medications or dissolve in water. 2. Mix with kitty litter, sawdust or any absorbent material. 3. Place is a sealed plastic bag and toss in trash. Prescription bottles were also difficult. People suggested their local vet, talking to several vets, they said no. I’m excited about the place I did find. He is a young man and as a 4-H project is working with a local free client. However, get your prescription bottles to him before he grows up! Batteries (the type you use around the house) like Coppertop and Alkaline (AAA, AA, C, D, 6V, 9V) that you use in flashlights, calculators, toys, clocks, smoke alarms, and remote controls can be placed in the trash (normal municipal waste).
